Colour Day - Flowers, Plants, Pigments & Process (Sat 22nd March)
Colour Day – natural dye and ink, tools for drawing, and floral still life. Led in collaboration with Ocre and Laura Slater
Saturday 22nd March
The Garden Studio, Saltaire
Timings: 10.00am - 4.00pm
This workshop is part of our Gather Create School series and is a full day workshop designed for participants wanting more dedicated time to explore different creative and natural processes. Designed for creatives, flower and plant lovers, artists and professionals, this day course gives every participant dedicated guided support and tuition as well as creative freedom to explore.
The day will be led by three artists and cover key processes and techniques including drawing and ink making, natural dye and fibres, and still life floral design. The workshop will look at the links between the three natural practices and how they can inform one another.
Drawing and ink making
Work with Laura Slater to discover natural materials and create drawing pigments. Explore ways to make drawing tools from dried plant materials, and with these spend time mark making and painting on paper and cloth.
Natural dye pots and fibres
Work with Ocre to learn the process and alchemy involved in natural dyeing. Explore raw materials and their colour potential. Create dye baths and learn how to embed botanical hues onto cloth by bundling, dipping, sprinkling and painting.
Still Life
Work with Terra Flora to design sculptural still lives with flowers. Explore artistic and sustainable approaches in floral design and combine these with the other elements that have been created throughout the day including naturally dyed cloth and drawings.
You will take away from the workshop a portfolio of creative drawing, ink colour tests, dyed fabric pieces and swatches and armfuls of flowers.
What’s included? … We provide all the materials, dye plants and flowers and any equipment required. Each participant will be given a sketchbook to keep technical notes and knowledge shared throughout the day. Throughout the day we will provide fika cakes and refreshments and a light vegetarian mezze lunch to enjoy. Please let us know in advance if you have any dietary needs.
